Have you wondered what the difference is between Osteoporosis and Osteopenia is and how physical therapy can help? We have got it covered.
Osteoporosis and osteopenia both involve decreased bone density.
Osteopenia is a precursor to osteoporosis, with lower-than-normal bone density that hasn’t yet reached the threshold for osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is more severe. Osteoporosis causes bones to be more fragile and prone to fractures, even from minor bumps or simple movements. This can lead to chronic pain, limited mobility, and a loss of independence. Fear of falling may cause people to avoid activities they once enjoyed, leading to isolation and decreased quality of life. Spinal fractures can cause height loss and stooped posture.
Altogether, these physical and emotional impacts can significantly affect daily routines and overall well-being.
Physical therapy helps both of these conditions by improving strength, balance, and posture, which can reduce fall and fracture risk. Weight-bearing and resistance exercises are especially beneficial for stimulating bone growth and slowing bone loss. Therapists also educate patients on safe movement strategies to protect fragile bones.
