Snow Shoveling Ergonomics

Writer's picture: All In Physical TherapyAll In Physical Therapy

Shoveling snow leads to some of the most common winter time injuries, including back strain, heart attack, broken bones, and falling. Ergonomic shovels are made to reduce strain on the lower back and prevent injury. Shovels that have an adjustable handle length, curved handle, and lightweight are recommended.

Shoveling Tips: keep feet wide, hinge at hips, keep back straight, avoid twisting, place feet in line with shovel, wear non-slip shoes, and take a break every 15 minutes to avoid overexertion.
